There was an Illinois House bill introduced recently which would do away with state drivers having two license plates. It would only require a plate on the rear of cars. Twenty states already have this in place and Illinois is somewhat behind the curve. It is likely the front plate is not necessary.
According to those promoting this bill, it would save the state 800,000 dollars a year in plate production.
When I was in the Illinois House, I received letters (that's how long ago this was) from Police Chiefs asking me to vote against the bill.
I wrote all the Chiefs on the letterhead asking how many arrests they had made of people not having a front license plate.
None provided such information.

That's interesting. Illinois is a rarity with two plates. About the only thing they do is add some decorative balance
