We in Illinois are very aware of how much gas costs in this state. So how much of price of each gallon goes to taxes?
"The federal government levies a tax of 18.4 cents on every gallon of gas sold to American motorists. On top of the federal gas tax, as of January 2022, Illinois levied an additional tax of 59.6 cents per gallon – the second highest gas tax among states.Including the federal tax, taxes account for 17.3% of the average price of a gallon of gas in the state." Only California is higher.
Compare this to our neighbor Missouri where total tax per gallon is 19.9 cents. No wonder so many are tempted to fill up across the river.
