It just got bigger.
Some weeks ago the story hit the wires that onions were being recalled due to salmonella contamination and onions, especially red onions disappeared from produce shelves. It wasn't long, however, before they reappeared. Now it seems what once was a problem for just a few store chains has now expanded. Not only fresh onions are involved- red, white and yellow but food with onions in it such as dips, sauces etc.
Trader Joes, Walmart, Kroger were known to have sold these onions. So far not Schnucks. But the brand names under which these onions are sold is at the link.
I was curious as to how salmonella gets into onions since vegetables are normally not as susceptible to this as meat is. So I looked it up. It could happen through contamination with animal feces, meat that had not been cleaned from the processing machines, or contaminated water or fertilizer.
