This past week Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and maybe some other stores put out a news release that they would stop locking up beauty products meant for Black women.
Were you aware these stores even did this? Beauty products of all kinds are given lots of shelf and aisle space in these stores and if you're like me, you may amble through them without noticing any thing locked up. I first noticed a difference in how these products were sold one day when I was in our local Walmart and needed some non-descript moisturizer or some such. What I wanted did not cost much, but in this particular Walmart anything to do with make-up, creams, etc had to be purchased in that aisle. No putting it in the cart and paying for it at a main check out line with everything else.
I was pretty shocked by this, I mean Walmart isn't Macy's with high cost cosmetics. But, there was a belief that if payment wasn't due at that point in the store, it would be stolen. And now with this news, it seems the worry over thefts was thought to be from Black women.
This is one of those stories that we need to hear, the singling out of one group is not good and I bet many others are as naive as I was.
