In the past year we've noticed more and more people who are working as grocery shoppers for those of us who don't want to do this. Go to the Schnucks near the seminary and there are almost as many delivery shoppers as traditional shoppers. Instacart is a big player in this. Lots of men and women with Instacart lanyards around their necks pushing carts and intently reading lists on their phones. I've noticed a big uptick in the number of men doing this, it used to be just women. They then deliver to the person who ordered. Walmart has a large number of people who do this online shopping as well. I've heard those who hold these grocery delivery jobs do well with tips.
It is also a growing trend in the restaurant business. Order online and your food is delivered. It is so popular in some places that many restaurants and even fast food places are not even having dining areas anymore and uses their kitchen primarily for home delivery. Chick-fil-A is also trying something different, opening three pilot “delivery kitchens” this year — in Chicago, Los Angeles, and one near San Francisco that is run by delivery platform DoorDash Inc.
I'm not sure why this is now so popular, why people would rather have things delivered rather than go out, but here we are. I kind of enjoy going to the grocery store, except on weekends. Our local Schnucks is just crazy most days of the week and even more so on Saturday and Sunday. Maybe that's why so many around here would rather others face the crowds.
I'm not ready for someone else to do my grocery shopping, I'll admit to being a bit fussy. I always look at the sell by date on perishable foods, it's an obsession. I even check that date on packaged goods. I don't want food that has a sell by date tomorrow and I have come across this in many deli areas.
