This past January I wrote about someone who penned angry words on several trees which had been cut down here on the campus. These were part of a group of diseased Ash Borer trees like many in the St. Louis area being removed. Whoever this was, and whoever it is, is not alone around here, just could not accept this.
Today I came across another huge tree which had recently been cut down. This time it was a huge old Oak. As I walked up to it there was no doubt about it's needing to go.

As you can see the entire tree was hollow and rotten. This tree was so big that if it had fallen after a rain or strong wind, someone walking through our park area could have been seriously hurt. As I was leaving the tree I noticed two older women coming up the sidewalk and stopping at this tree. Their arm gestures told me they were upset a tree was down so I walked over to have a chat with them. They didn't give me a chance to say a word before they started in on the trees which have been cut down on the seminary property. One said, "I've lived in this neighborhood for over 30 years and walk through here all the time and believe me, we all notice what happens to the trees."
Well. That did it for me. I asked if they were the ones who graffiti-ed the other trees. Supposedly they didn't know anything about it. After explaining the Ash Borer situation and reminding them that Clayton has been taking down the exact same type of trees, they went on about one remaining Ash over on Demun. If that could still stand, why not the others. I said, that little park will be getting a renovation and most likely the tree will come down.
They walked off, still in a bit of huff about trees, talking back at me over their shoulder.
Sheesh. Clayton people can be a bit much.
