I've really enjoyed the Olympics this year, maybe because there are so many neat US competitor stories. As a contrast to the competition, the Opening Ceremonies broadcast by NBC were horrible. Tape delay, too many commercials etc. But since then it's been a great way to spend an evening.
Swimmer Katie Ledecky is from Bethesda Maryland near where our daughter Katie lives and so we've been caught up in the excitement over her success. As a bonus we've had the Michael Phelps story, a swimmer who just won his 20th individual gold medal. He's also from Maryland. This morning I came across a tweet which pictures a 9 year old Katie Ledecky getting an autograph from Michael Phelps.
Both of these swimmers are amazing but with Ledecky you have a young woman of 19 who is in her second Olympics! In 2012 she won the gold medal in the 800 freestyle at age 15. This year she has won 2 golds.
Phelps who is 12 years older than Ledecky began his Olympic career in 2000 when he too was 15. He did not medal that year but his career took off after that. In 2004 he won 6 golds and two bronze medals. He won 8 gold medals in 2008 and in 2012 he got 4 gold and 2 silver medals.
