An unsettling conversation yesterday afternoon with a local neighbor visiting with her dog.
We were talking about the return of the owls to our area and their constant hunt for little animals/birds to feed their new babies.
Neighbor: I didn't know there were owls nearby, but there are bats.
The rest of us: Bats?
Neighbor: We saw at least 250 bats.
Us:
Neighbor: Yes. We watched from our window as all these bats flew across the road near My Daddy's Cheesecake, swirled around the top of the chimney at the old CBC high school and then they all flew down into the chimney.
Us: Ugh.
One of us: Well, bats are good for getting rid of mosquitoes.
Another of us: Owls go after bats, they can catch them on the fly.
Neighbor: I wonder what this means for the summer.
One of us: Two bats always come and sit in my father's pool, cool their feet.
Another of us: oh eeeuw good for mosquitoe control but eeeuw
One of us: Looks like the neighborhood has a food supply for two bird types.
Neighbor: You really should walk down and see all the bats go down the chimney.
Us: Hopefully the owls will find them
One of us: It's a strange image, all these horror film birds in an urban area.
Another of us: We share the world, we just forget this too often.
