Out in Pacific Missouri, about 5 miles beyond Six Flags, is a Golden Retriever Rescue facility called Dirk's Fund, a safe haven for Goldens for about ten years. Dirk's takes dogs who are turned in by owners who can no longer keep them, or are found roaming, or rescued from various metro animal shelters. Let me just say, these people love the dogs and work tirelessly to bring sick, mistreated, or homeless Goldens back to health and make sure they all find loving homes.
We went out to Dirk's Fund several weeks ago and I only wish I had had a video camera. The facility is set up so that the dogs have time to roam the common areas which are decked out with couches and even a tv.
The man in the picture is Bob, the owner of Dirk's, someone who loves these animals to the nth degree, they are his life, caring for them, nursing them, finding homes. When adoption days are held, each Saturday and Sunday, you walk into the building and are immediately surrounded by golden retrievers, all looking to be petted and maybe adopted.
The outside is set up with a couple of large play areas, one all grass the other chips of some kind. Each day each dog gets time to romp and play. Dirk's website has better pictures of this because today was totally snowy which makes everything seem the same. Although, the dogs all love going out and playing in the snow.
When I pulled up today, Bob's van was parked out front and inside were three of his own personal dogs.
The dog in the middle is a chocolate Newfoundland, a dog Bob rescued from an owner who threatened to slice the dog's head off. What is the matter with people?
Dirk's fund is a 501(c)3 which is always in need of help to support these beautiful dogs, any donation is tax deductable and if anyone has any extra money they want to use for a good cause, this is it. Big or small, anything will help. Bob is hoping to be able to buy the property right next to the current place in order to take care of senior citizen goldens who aren't normally sought after for adoption. He wants them to have a good place in which to live out their lives.
Let me tell you, the dogs at Dirks are happy dogs, if you have a desire to help dogs, this is the place.
And yes, we got a new dog today who ironically originated at the Collinsville animal shelter and even more ironically, Bob gave him a new purple collar as a send off. Kahok purple. Bob has no idea the Kahoks are purple and white. We haven't named him yet, he's the happiest and most friendly thing ever, around 2 years old. Here he is with Bob this morning just before I took him home.
