The November issue of Sauce Magazine had any number of interviews with St. Louis chefs and the one thing most agreed on was that St. Louisans aren't real crazy about "that Gourmet stuff".
They prefer pumpkin pie over pumpkin beer.
They "won't come out of the box" when it comes to desserts. "Some are willing to experience ginger ice cream, but a lot of customers cringe at the mere mention of the lavender and pistachio ice cream."
They worry about chefs and even Sauce magazine "veering into dangerous foodie territory."
This last can't be argued after reading what Sauce editor Catherine Neville had to say about her experience at local restaurant, Niche, where she had bacon ice cream.
"...As the ice cream melted on the plate, it became a sauce. The contrast of the cold, savory ice cream and the warm, sweet pork belly was a fun play on temperatures, flavors and textures."
Ok. Now that's dangerous foodie territory if ever was. And the question then becomes, "What wine would you drink with that?" Bacon ice cream indeed.
i think it's time to think about some tastey squirrel dish.
Letter carriers occasionally have to deal with angry dogs or maybe even a spider's nest in a mailbox, but a mean squirrel?
Barb Dougherty, a 30-year Postal Service employee, said she was attacked and bitten Monday by a squirrel while delivering mail in Oil City, about 75 miles north of Pittsburgh.
"It was a freak thing. It was traumatic," Dougherty told The Derrick newspaper. "I saw it there on the porch, put the mail in the box and turned to walk away and it jumped on me."
She said the animal ran up her leg and onto her back.
"I eventually got a hold of the tail and pulled it off me," Dougherty said. "No one was home at the house where I was delivering the mail, but the neighbor lady heard me screaming and came over."
An ambulance took Dougherty to a hospital, where she was treated for cuts and scratches. The squirrel was killed with a BB gun and sent to a lab to be tested for rabies. Dougherty was given the first series of rabies shots as a precaution.
Postal officials said the attack is extraordinary.
"In about 230 years of postal history, I bet it is not the first, but I've personally never heard of another squirrel biting," said Steve Kochersperger, spokesman for the Erie district.

Unbelievablely, on "TOP CHEF" competition this week the participants were challenged to create a new and popular flavor of ice cream. Two of the group used bacon as a flavoring; sounds terrible.
Thay were surprised that the judges would be poeple at the beach, including children. Needless to say - no bacon flavored ice cream placed in the top three.
