I want to be frank. No, not Frank J over at IMAO, a blogger with way too much talent, but frank about Martha Stewart. I have always liked her. There, I said it. In no way did I ever jump on the kick Martha trend in years past because her magazine and her television shows provided a lot of good conversation between my daughters and I. She was pretty much responsible for all of us becoming interesting in cooking and after whetting our interest in food moving us to watch and learn from other cooks
There is nothing better than food freshly prepared. It isn't easy, it takes time and more than a little stockpiling of correct utensils. From Martha, the three of us girls became collectors of antique or collectable, but usable, kitchen ware of one sort or another. One daughter has a collection of depression glass, the other jadeware. I went for the old gadgets. All of us will now slam on the brakes when we spot an interesting antique shop. These little trips have done more than add to collections, they have taught us a lot about history and the daughters at least are more interesting people because of Martha Stewart.
Now she has been released from her prison and from all accounts she did a lot of "good things" while there, not the least of which is the support and friendship she gave to the other inmates. Another woman in Martha' position might have spent her five months sulking in her room, but that doesn't appear to be the case with her. Stories abound about how she did all the floor washing, laundry, etc grub work everyone else did, no special favors. And how she befriended and taught and encouraged the other, not so special inmates, so much so that they became protective of her, gathering round her in the "yard" so that helicopter cameras couldn't film her.
This is getting kind of sappy, this isn't an obituary, its only a prison release, but it brings me to the final thing. Now that she's out and home, Martha will spend 5 more months on house arrest wearing an electronic ankle bracelet monitoring device. She is not allowed to have any contact with anyone she befriended in prison and better not have any alcohol, either to drink or to cook with. But wait! There are more strictures put on her...This strikes me as insane, especially when you compare her situation with so many, especially the good old boy men brokers, who seem to get off without a scratch.
Hang in there til August, Martha, and we, my daughters and I, will help you lift a glass to real freedom.
