We landed in Houston last night and made our way to the Hilton Americas in downtown. Had a late dinner in the casual lobby place, whew, two sandwiches were outrageously expensive. Like many people who go to conferences or conventions in downtown cities, we take our first meal or two in the hotel for convenience, then we find some other place to avoid the inflated prices.
The frustrating thing is not getting free wireless in the room. Room wireless is 12.95 a day, a price I will not pay as much as I cannot bear being away from the internet too long. So I'm in the lobby which does have free wireless. Go figure. Anyone can walk in off the street and use the internet, but those who are staying here and paying for their rooms here, are charged for room wireless.
On the other hand, the staff at the Hilton Americas cannot be nicer. Not only are they helpful, but they all, from bellhops to cleaners to security to servers, make a point of asking if anything is needed whenever they pass by.
I had a rousing conversation this morning with a woman working the hotel gift shop about where LeBron James is headed. She is positive it is going to be Miami. As for me, $2.79 for one bottle of Coke.
The weather is picturesque. There is some sort of tropical pattern going on, the morning was dark with rain and clouds which clung to street level. I think i will find a way to go shopping while the MAtH is in meetings. Having been here 12 hours, I realized we do not have nearly enough articles of clothing with the word TEXAS on them.
