How fast can you type?

Take the test and see how many words you can type in one minute.  The test is a string of words, not sentences, which makes it a bit disconcerting.  The little timer is on the top left and when you type in all the words you first see, hit enter and you'll get more until the 60 seconds runs out.

Weekend word games

The Washington Post has a variety of online puzzles and crosswords to wile away a rainy Saturday or lazy Sunday.

Cricklers is fun, the Post calls it "Crosswords out side the box" and "A word game for the computer age."  The Crickler link has a helpful introductory game so you can learn how it is played and on the top right of the page there is a drop down box from which you can choose real games.

Anagrams

Not exactly a quiz, but a website dedicated to helping you find how many ways any word or words, of your choice can be arranged into other words.

Anagrams.  I typed in seminary and got quite a few results, some of which don't seem like english words, but, hey, this is a fun way to spend some time.  And helpful if you have friends who like to get together and play word games.

Thanks Kathy.

Wii span the generations

We sent our daughter and son in law a Nintendo Wii for Christmas, a game we were lucky to find before Thanksgiving.  While they seem to love it and their friends seem to love it and the entire universe seems to love it so much Wii's are impossible to get right now, perhaps the greatest use for it lies with senior citizens.

The Wii is interactive, players use a remote and actually mimic the movement of sports like tennis, golf, bowling etc.  It took a year or so, but someone finally decided to bring a Wii to a retirement center or two, a nursing home or two, and found that the older people living in those homes took to the games just as younger people do.  This seems to me to be an astounding breakthrough in how senior citizens can find fun during their day as well as get just a bit of a metabolism rise which is a good thing for anyone.  Laughter and higher metabolism leads to a feeling of well being that can't be found just sitting around waiting for meals.

Did Nintendo realize what they had when they brought out the Wii and the DS handheld system?  Maybe, maybe not.  The Nintendo DS can be used with Brain Age, a game which forces a person to think, remember, and yes, laugh.  It's been a while since we had to think much about video game systems, but congratulations are due Nintendo for compiling a couple of systems which provide something for an older generation who previously had very little in the way of stimulation during the course of their days.

And, having Wii consoles in senior citizen living centers may just get the grandchildren over to visit a bit more often.

Donating rice one grain at a time

A vocabulary test from Free Rice.  For every word you answer correctly, ten grains of rice are donated by the organization running the site to "a hungry person" somewhere in the world.  Ten grains of rice doesn't sound like much, who is in a rice warehouse counting this out?  But, the site claims to donate 5 million grains a day.

I quit the vocabulary test after getting to the point where 420 grains would be coming from me.
