A news story on KMOV begins: "Jumbo jet-sized asteroid to give Earth a close shave". The asteroid measures somewhere between 125 feet and 390 feet wide and is expected to buzz by this planet today and be only 126,000 miles away. I guess in space terms, that is close.
It's good news it will most likely miss us, but this story reminds me of one of my mother's fears. Whenever a space story would appear in the news while I was growing up she'd mostly try to avoid reading about it or listening to reports about it. She'd also always share a dream she had several times during her childhood which was of a meteor speeding toward earth and about to hit right where she was.
Maybe that's why space stories only mildly interest me. And, this story headline calls the asteroid a "jumbo-jet" sized rock. But how many jumbo jets are only 125 to 390 feet in size?
