The beginning of Lent often sees lists of places which have Friday fish frys and this year is no different. Meatless Fridays aren't just for Catholics anymore, many people have taken to loving fried fish. The Belleville News Democrat put out a list of Metro East fish fries yesterday and it seems pretty complete, featuring most Illinois side communities.
The common denominator to these fish dinners is cod with the addition of catfish in many places. Some will also have shrimp, walleye, and a couple of places, jack salmon and talapia but those last two are very rare in the Metro East. Granite City has Pollock. I don't know what Pollock is, but cod are in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
I'll confess I'm not a fish eater. At all. But I recognize the popularity among most people. And this is the time of year for fish eating.
