There has been a lime shortage recently. I did not know this, but I have noticed some stores no longer carried them and those who did sold teeny tiny limes. Turns out the drought in California, the artic winter cold in Florida and heavy rains and flooding in Mexico caused limes to be almost non existent. Now there is hope for your vodka and tonics and guacamoles as the weather has moderated and all things citrus is getting better.
But during the no lime weeks, Mexican drug cartels got into the lime business with kidnapping, human trafficking and extortion of various business owners, including those involved in lime exports. Evil people are the first to see an advantage in anything, even fruit. The world is a crazy place.
