We're living in a 'grow your own' era, vegetable gardens have become rather commonplace on vacant city lots and in corners of school yards. We all want our vegetables fresh and organic. But in the World War II days, much of what food was raised on farms had to go to the troops overseas so a huge Victory Garden campaign was created to encourage citizens to put in their own gardens. By growing their own, they allowed more to be given to the troops. At one time during the war there were 20,000,000 victory gardens.
Here are a few of the many posters and articles put up to garner enthusiasm and a sense of patriotism among the folks back home. On this link there are tons more of these posters and Victory Garden photos. Really a fascinating look back.
Even comic book characters got into it.
There were many newspaper stories giving advice to city people who'd never planted a garden.
I've tried hard to understand this one.
Now this I can understand.
