Our daughter Katie worked for Senator Tom Coburn for some years which makes his decision to end his tenure at the end of this congressional year personal and sad. My words would not do justice in describing this honorable man so I'll let Katie's words this morning suffice.
"America will lose a genuine statesman in D.C. at year's end, but I have no doubt he will continue to make a great impact from the Sooner State. In the years I worked for him, not a single time did I ever hear him say, "We have to do X for X group," or "this will hurt my re-election." The only thing he ever asked staff was, "Is this the right thing to do," or "will this fix the problem." A rare and wonderful leader with tremendous courage and smarts. "
As parents of a child working in DC we had no uneasiness at all knowing Katie's Boss would be there for his staff, personally and professionally.
We remember especially the concern and attention he gave to his people. He expected his staff to work hard and he did the same, but always he thanked and praised them for their efforts.
Here's how I'll remember him during Katie's years.
The senate can be intimidating but not Senator Coburn.
If only there were more men like Senator Tom Coburn.
