We were talking with a man from Africa recently, a man who was raised in a Muslim community but who is now Christian and Lutheran more specifically. When he converted his family shunned him and since he has been in the states he pays attention to the trends in Islam here in the US.
What struck me was this. More than 200,000 American women convert to Islam each year. They do this for several reasons. The women see Islam as having strong family and community relationships. Men treat them well they say...and often Muslim men in the US are financially well off.
And, Muslims are working hard at converting people here in America and are doing it rather smartly, by using converts like the women to get other converts.
The interesting thing about Islam for so many women was the desire for a strong family and extended family. What that says is that the family in the US is no longer the strong institution it once was but that the desire for a stable family life remains.
