Remember the World Series in 2004? The Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 4 straight games to win their first World Series Championship since 1918. But do you remember that they won the final game in Busch Stadium?
Here's a photo from that night taken by Eric Wilbur for Boston.com
Members of the Busch Stadium grounds crew bagged up dirt from the mound for members of the team and for Cooperstown. Hopefully this will not happen this year. Also, do you remember that the 2004 series was played in the old Busch? It was not until 2006 that the new stadium opened.
And, Remember pitcher Woody Williams? Very popular with local fans that year. Here's a photo from the 04 series with Williams on the mound flanked by Tony La Russa and of all people, current manager and then catcher, Mike Matheny.
Williams signed with the Padres after that season, then went to the Houston Astros in November of 06. He had a poor 2007 season and was released by Houston and then retired. He is in the record books for being only one of 13 pitchers to win a game against all 30 MLB teams.
