The Menards home improvement company has slowly but surely moved into the St. Louis area big time as new stores open all around the metro. Now Richmond Heights will be getting one to be built in Hadley Township, a neighborhood just east of Hanley Road and the site of much fighting over development and home buy outs over the years.
Menards is from up north and kind of cool in ways home improvement stores are, but the question that nags at me is how will the Richmond Heights store affect the nearby Lowes and Home Depot. Menards will make 3 of this type of store within a stones throw of each other. If I'd be asked to bet, I'd bet that at least one of the current stores will close, most likely Lowes because that store does much less business than the always crowded Home Depot.
Too bad, really. It would have been much more fun to hear that an IKEA was coming to that Menard's spot, but rumor after rumor has been false on that score. For some reason IKEA doesn't look favorably on St. Louis, but again, I'd bet they'd do boffo business in Richmond Heights.
