One attendee said he was leaving LouFest when he noticed “tons of break-ins, windows bashed out all over.” That person said police were on the scene speaking with angry victims."
This happens so often in St. Louis during big events and there was some indication by the police department that there would be extra patroling, but obviously this did not happen. One person on the scene said the police were "too busy having illegally parked cars towed." Tongue in cheek.
A spokesman for the police department said this morning: "they didn’t doubt the break-ins had occurred Sunday night but had no direct knowledge of it because officers at the scene are not required to contact the command post about such crimes"
For Pete's sake, come on, what kind of nonsense is this. And how can these car window smashing, robberies be finally brought under control? St. Louisans come out to big events in large numbers, the community is very supportive of much of fun weekend fests, which makes the continual vandalism and thefts of cars even more puzzling. There has to be a better way of stemming these brazen acts or people will begin to rethink coming to Forest Park or Downtown.
And the Great Forest Park Balloon Race is on the horizon. Time to come up with a plan. Maybe the penalties for car break-ins are too light, time to tighten them up for the sake of the city of St. Louis?
Here's another Tweet from a St. Louisan from last night: "Leaving Lou-Fest tonight and see tons of break-ins, windows bashed out all over and cops/pissed off people. Unfortunate end to the day."
