There are those who firmly believe all this traffic jam up frustration due to MoDOT and IDOT road construction will lead to better and safer roads. Well and good, and it could be correct. The problem is, and the reason why it is so infuriating to have to sit in these long back-ups is because so many of the work projects are merely temporary fixes. Which means the crews will be back next summer in the same spots doing the same things.
From the BND today: "Traffic was flowing normally Monday morning on the Poplar Street Bridge after emergency roadwork caused frustration for motorists over the weekend.
The Missouri Department of Transportation had hoped to hold off resurfacing the Poplar Street Bridge until 2016 after the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge was in service. But the asphalt surface of the Poplar Street bridge had peeled up in large patches, making emergency repairs necessary.
According to Jeff Church of the Illinois Department of Transportation, his Missouri counterparts are hopeful the repairs will hold on the Poplar Street Bridge for a couple of years until the permanent fix can be done."Call me a whiner about traffic issues, but we're living in what could be named a perfect storm of road construction, day after day, everywhere we have to go from St. Louis to Collinsville is just one mess of construction cones, lane changes, slow downs and near misses after another.
It gets very wearying.
