After what was one of the most pleasant summers St. Louis has had in a long time, here come the high 90's. We know they won't last for weeks, but at the moment this rapid heat wave is physically troubling and just about everyone who has to be outside for any length of time should take care because we haven't acclimated to it.
Your body can adapt to heat if you've gradually been out in it regularly, but this late heat will hit many hard since there has been no opportunity to acclimate. The same is true for pets. I noticed last night that Ferdie was just a limp rag of a dog by 7. I confess I had him out with me maybe too much yesterday.
According to experts it takes 10-14 days to really acclimate your body to high temperatures, a length of time we haven't had.
Local sports teams are having to rethink their practice times and venues, some are even cancelling to protect their kids. So take care out there.
