Concordia Seminary has been working all summer to re-do several classrooms and bringing in new desks. At first it the plan was to offer the old desks to students and staff and probably recycle the rest. We knew the desks were good ones and it is the practice around here to never just toss anything in the dumpster, we reuse or give away as much as possible. Even trees that are cut down are planed into lumber.
But we didn't realize how many people in the St. Louis area would want those desks. KSDK did a story on the desks last Friday and since then the response has been unbelieveable. As of yesterday several hundred have been given away to people who came early and often as soon as the seminary opened with staff yesterday. It's been a joyful surprise.
Here are some of the desks before the onslaught.
Representatives of schools and non profits came, individuals who wanted just a couple. An organization out of Highland is taking everything that is left to ship down to a school in Nicaragua. And, Collinsville will be the recipient of this pile of the desks pictured below.
They will go to Collinsville Christian Academy, someone is coming for them tomorrow, but I really wish they'd come get them today to take away the opportunity for someone to come by and just help themselves. In any event, I'm glad to see Collinsville get some of these desks, just a little bit of the seminary across the street from our house.
