Local St. Louis musician, Bob Reuter, fell to his death when he stepped into an elevator in a downtown loft he was moving into. The door opened, he stepped into what was a dark space thinking the elevator was there but it was not.
Now the story is being told that this elevator, an Otis, is 100 years old and has no record of ever being inspected.
Maggie Crane, a spokeswoman for Mayor Francis Slay, said the city performed an inspection of the property in May. Crane said the building fixed an electrical issue before citations were issued. The building passed a previous inspection last year, with no citations.
Crane said the elevator doors were locked during the city’s building inspection, which doesn’t include operating certificates for elevators.
Unreal in this age of constant inspections.
