These are interesting statistics about Illinois:
As of 2010 and not factoring in 2011's 67 percent tax rate hike, Illinois has the 9th highest tax burden in the nation. Probably higher now.
Illinois has the second highest personal property tax in the country, New Jersey the highest
Illinois has 17 counties in the top 100 highest property tax of all US counties. St Clair County is amongst them.

There are plenty who don't like our system, but it was passed by referendum, will be impossible to change. I sympathize with newlyweds or other young adults faced with the larger tax bill than their neighbors.

Illionis homes are required by law to be reassessed every 4 years.
No wonder the retirees and long time residents can live in California, with subsidized taxes subsidized. Prices are artifically inflated to the property tax controls. I'll bet that tax system was put in place by those nasty Republicans!!!

So many cars of people residing in St Louis have Illinois plates. When I've asked why I hear it's less expensive.I wonder if it has to do with city earnings tax.
My friends in Ill. always say everything costs more there. Does anybody know the answer?

Ron, read my post. It was a referendum of the people (you familiar with that? ) which, as you know, is largely Democratic in California - tho much less so in 1978.

However, the proponent of Prop 13 (the referendum) was Howard Jarvis, he of the anti-tax crusade in California. The Assn. still exists, am sure they'd get a chuckle from your take on their anti-tax work. Jarvis was (died in 1986) kind of a Tea Partier tho mostly concerned with taxes. A failed Republican candidate for several offices.
