Yesterday morning Ferdie headed straight to the underside of a tree, snuffled around in that frantic way dogs have when they're on the scent of something and then came running out from the low hanging branches with something in his mouth. It took only a split second to realize it was an animal of some sort, maybe a squirrel. I shouted at him to "put that down, put that down!" And he did. I put him in the house and went back to look.
Ugh. It was half a rabbit. Really. The bottom half of a rabbit, the hips, tail and back legs. The head, shoulders and stomach were gone leaving a bloody gaping wound. I went and got a shovel and picked it up without looking at it as much as I could and disposed of it, feeling guilty that such a cute creature ended up in a trash can.
It had to be a hawk or an owl, those birds are around here and this is how they kill other local animals. Swoop down, eat the best parts and drop the rest. Nature can be ugly.
