Perhaps one of the most unique Lutheran services is the program involving the Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dogs. All Golden Retrievers, these animals and their handlers have been actively on site in places where tragedy and natural disasters have taken place and this weekend was no different. After news of the horror in Newtown Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School broke, the dogs were loaded up and on their way. A story about them in Newtown from the Boston Herald. And in the Chicago Tribune.
Here are a couple of images of their time in Newtown yesterday.
These dogs have an inate emphathy for troubled, sad or ill people, and provide a calm and comfort to them. Their posture says, "Touch me, pet me, I'm here for you." Just one part of our Lord's creation for which we can give thanks.
If you'd like to help support the work of the K-9 Comfort Dogs, here is an online form on which to do so.

We saw these beautiful dogs on two national news shows in the last 24 hours- NBC news with Brian Williams and this morning on CBS with Charlie Rose. One dog was named Luther and it was mentioned at least in the NBC piece that they were affiliated with the Lutheran Church.
