Today is National Dog Biscuit Day! Or as some call it, International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day.
How odd. No one really knows how this became a national day, but there is some belief that the origin of dog biscuits began in London in the mid 1800's when American James Pratt noticed way too many starving dogs roaming the streets of that city. He was concerned enough about this that he developed a biscuit made of meat, vegetables and grain he named Meat Fibrine Dog Cake. The rest is history.
Dog biscuits or dog treats are a huge business these days with treats coming in all kinds of flavors, sizes and shapes. If you are in the St. Louis area and want a free treat for your dog you can take him/her over to one of the Kennelwood Pet Resorts where they will be handing out free treats today.
One word of caution though, modern day treats are fairly heavy on calories. As a matter of fact Ferdie's vet told us when he was in for his annual checkup Tuesday that treats are probably the biggest cause of canine weight gain.
So let your dog celebrate National Dog Biscuit Day, but don't over do it.

In the absence of Gump, there are no bicuits in my home to celebrate National Dog Biscuit Day. It's okay; yesterday was National Margarita Day and I didn't celebrate that, either.

You should have a dog, get one who'll get you out and running. :)
