So say researchers at Tel Aviv University. Overweight people in the study got to eat 600 calories at breakfast and a piece of chocolate cake while a second group were given 300 calories in a low carb breakfast. Both groups lost 33 pounds halfway through the 32 week study, but the 300 calorie side gained 22 pounds back while the dessert group lost 15 more pounds the last half of the study.
How does this happen? "The group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day. The participants in the low-carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction and felt that they were not full," so their cravings for sugars and carbohydrates were more intense as the day passed. Many broke down and cheated on their diet, so they lost, on average, 40 pounds less than peers who got to have their cake, and lose weight too."
Sensible really. It's a rare person who can get through a boring low calorie diet. I'd bet the metabolism which would be raised in the dessert group helped them feel more energetic during the day and burn more calories.
