Saturday Houston will be the site of the Olympic Marathon trials and many in St. Louis and Missouri will be rooting for one, no two, of our own who qualified for the trials back in October.
Back when our daughter Katie was running for the University of Missouri in Cross Country and Track, one of her teammates on the men's side was Adam MacDowell. Like many running teams, the men and women became close and true supporters of each other. I remember Adam being at our house with others from MU and Katie at his house. My fondest memory is of Adam's mother giving Katie a set of green depression glass dishes after Katie mentioned she'd been collecting them since grade school.
Now Adam MacDowell is the pride of that era of runners as he prepares to run the Olympic Marathon trials. Adam who teaches math and coaches track and cross country at Parkway South High School, qualified for the trials back in October at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
Here's a look back at Adam with his Mizzou cross country team after they qualified for the NCAA Nationals probably sophomore year.
Adam is second from the right, the only one with a hat on. Wow, does this bring back memories of watching the MU mens and womens team do so well back then. What nice people they were and are to this day. I also noticed that digital cameras have come a long way since then.
On the womens side, Jackie Pirtle-Hall, a graduate of Francis Howell High School who spent a couple of years running for Mizzou, will also be competing in Houston.
The race will have 158 men and 223 women vying for only 3 places on the 2012 Olympic team.
Run strong Adam and Jackie.
