Mayor Slay and some other city officials planned a meeting for 3 O'clock this afternoon at the Edward Jones Dome with the occupy St Louis protesters. Slay had hopes of the group seeing reason and possibly packing up and leaving Kiener Plaza.
But no. After keeping the Mayor and the local news media waiting and holding their breaths, occupy StL said they would not meet at the Jones dome. Maybe if the Mayor showed up and stood out in the rain at Kiener Plaza...
Forget it. The spokesman for this gang had already told the press that if they were tossed out, they'd be back with even more people. Ordering them out would only bring tons more protesters.
I guess that is their hope, that the city will order them gone and everyone else in St. Louis with nothing to do would show up and join them. Doubtful.
They'd do themselves a favor if they used their time to raise money for the St. Louis area food bank or the Salvation Army's Tree of Lights. At least they'd be contributing something other than sitting around downtown holding a sign or lying in a tent surfing the web on their iPhones or iPads or laptops.
Meanwhile Occupy Wall Street protesters have decided to begin a march down the highway from NYC to DC. This is to begin tomorrow with a hopeful gain of 20 miles per day for 2 weeks, walking on the highway from 9-5. Bankers hours. Reality will hit the first day when they learn not many of them have the endurance to walk 20 miles a day in 8 hours much less 2 weeks of 20 miles per day.
Surely the state police in New York, Maryland and the District of Columbia will not allow this 'occupy the highway'. Or surely this is a satire.
