Michelle Obama is planning a vegetable garden on the south lawn of the White House, an 1100 square foot garden which will include various lettuces, herbs, peppers, tomatoes etc. They want an organic garden which will produce healthy, appealing produce. There will be no beets, the president does not like them.
They are not alone. Around here there seems to be a vegetable garden boom, everyone is planning to grow something, tomatoes and peppers at the very least. One neighbor has tilled up most of her back yard, filled the dirt with compost and is working out what will go where.
Yesterday we planted red leaf lettuce plants and broccoli. Today we'll plunk in pole bean seeds and radishes.
I had to laugh though when I read Michelle Obama's take on heirloom tomatoes: "A real delicious heirloom tomato is one of the sweetest things that you’ll ever eat." True enough. But, does the south lawn of the White House have squirrels? If it does, good-bye heirloom tomatoes, any tomatoes for that matter.
Of course, at the White House, the vegetable garden may have its own secret service detail just to keep squirrels and rabbits away. If they don't, I'd be very interested in learning how they plan to keep these pests away.

Diane, remember that they do have sharpshooters on the roof.

And, Todd, I bet they aren't holding paint guns like the kids around here do.

If you figure it out, let me know! My lettuce seeds have sprouted!
