"He's just changed the whole dynamic at the school"
Collinsville High School principal, Eric Flohr, has been named Illinois High School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principal Association. Yesterday afternoon teachers gathered in the school's media center and surprised him with the announcement.
Although he has only been at CHS for two years the atmosphere and changes for the better are stunning according to those who work with him and the teachers who nominated him for the award.
The BND has a photo from yesterday on its website showing him being congratulated by Latin teacher extraordinaire, Mary Lee Muniz, as well as a video of the event by the paper's Steve Nagy. The video is well worth a look by anyone interested in education and the people who provide it.
The two who happen to be in the photo are just two of the reasons why it irks the heck out of me when I read or hear the Collinsville schools being denigrated, especially in comments in the paper. People who write those insulting things at the end of news stories just don't know what they're talking about.
It's great to read a story of good things happening in the community, especially in the school district.

Eric is truly a great leader and an asset to our community. We were fortunate to bring him to Collinsville. In the past two years he has made significant improvements at Collinsville High School in attitudes, efforts, and results. Anyone who continues to belittle our school district demonstrates their ignorance and total lack of knowledge of the situation.

Kudos to Unit 10 and to Eric Flohr. There are GOOD things happening in our schools and just as important the message is getting out there. Let's hope the school district gets fair and adequate funding from future growth in Collinsville to maintain the positive momentum.
