Color forecasting

Yes, there is such a thing as color forecasting and one color authority, Pantone, has declared the coming year's color to be Blue Iris.  Last year Pantone's color was chili pepper.  According to Pantone, "Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspects of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic."

Pantone's palate often shows up in fashion, interior design, and graphics.  Not everyone in the color business agrees with Pantone or sees them as the arbitrator of color.  Margaret Walsh of the Color Association which has been forecasting color since 1915 prefers the color bamboo for 2008 because, "bamboo represents the stable green that is most on people’s minds.   And, "I feel it just has a power. You know, these are very insecure times."

I think of bamboo is being beigy, but she must be talking about the bamboo leaves or the wood before it matures.  In any event, it appears the color forecasters are all looking for an anchor in their lives.  The blue is cooler, though, especially in the room pictured at the top of the New York Times story.
