Something new in some cities, but not yet in St. Louis, is Flexcar, a car sharing way of getting around the city when you don't own a car. With more interest in the environmental problems associated with exhaust from autos, it appears there is greater interest in trying to live without a car. Steve Patterson of St. Louis Urban Review began this car-less lifestyle this summer and brings up the idea of a St. Louis Flexcar program where cars are left in certain areas, especially areas where there is no bus/train service.
San Diego has a Flexcar program which has begun to fulfill a growing demand. That city currently has 12 cars in the growing downtown area and residents who want to be a part of this car borrowing program pay $200 a month, which allows them use of a car for up to 25 hours and 750 free miles.
