Myopic Zeal...My left foot
The long awaited report of CBS's investigation of the 60 Minutes/Dan Rather report on President Bush's National Guard service record has arrived, bringing with it an interesting rational for their use of fraudulent documents. "Myopic Zeal". This bland sounding excuse for terrible behavior on the part of a national media outlet just got four 60 Minutes staffers fired including Producer Mary Mapes, executive producer Josh Howard, Howard's top aid, Mary Murphy, and senior vice-president Betsy West. As to Rather, because he apologized and stepped down no further action will be taken against him according to top CBS executive, Leslie Moonves. He was, however, faulted for "errors of credulity and over-enthusiasm". And yet...no evidence could be found to conclude the report was politically motivated.
Mapes, the producer who galloped happily into the document sunset shouting hosannas at the prospect of bringing down Bush, had no comment.
Here's a sampling of what the blog world, the world wholly responsible for uncovering and publicizing the made up documents, has to say about today's CBS report.
Joe Gandelman of the Moderate Voice: "The controversy isn't over."
Wizbang: "This is just too funny. The whole thing started when Mapes went cruising the lefty moonbat sites and gets suckered."
Blogs for Bush: A nice list of who is saying what about the findings of the report.
Bill at INDC Journal: "The idea that Mary Mapes and Dan Rather had no political agenda is simply ludicrous, but the media and its established analysts need to play the old "vee know nussing" game to maintain the grand illusion of ideological impartiality in journalism."
Update: No story about Dan Rather and the documents would be complete with an analysis from Powerline ,a blog site which played a major role in publicizing the falsified papers.
